Tesla's plans to introduce robotaxis and a new rideshare service have generated significant interest, but there are still many uncertainties surrounding the project. The rideshare service, dubbed "Cyber Cab" by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, is expected to be accessible within the Tesla app. Similar to Uber, users will be able to hail a self-driving vehicle and adjust the car's temperature before pickup.
Musk describes the service as a "combination of Airbnb and Uber," noting that some of the cars will be owned and operated by Tesla, while others will be owned by individual users. This blend of ownership models could create a unique and flexible rideshare experience.
However, Tesla's self-driving technology has faced criticism and legal challenges. The company recently settled a lawsuit regarding a fatal crash in 2018 that involved a driver using Tesla's autopilot driving mode. This has raised concerns about the safety and reliability of Tesla's autonomous vehicles.
Additionally, Tesla's history of product delays, such as the years-long saga of the Cybertruck, adds to the skepticism about how quickly the robotaxis will be widely available. While Tesla is making strides in autonomous vehicle technology, it may still be some time before their robotaxis become a common sight on the roads.
